How To Maintain Your Vinyl Siding

Great Tips On Maintaining Your Vinyl Siding In American Fork, UT
Keep Your Vinyl Siding Looking Like New
RGS Exteriors has been proudly serving Utah homeowners for over 60 years, installing our vinyl siding in American Fork and the Salt Lake City Area. We know that high value is the key to success. For us, that means a home exterior that will stand the test of time. Either it’s done right, or it isn’t done.
These values are especially true when it comes to the various types of siding we offer. At RGS Exteriors, we make our own vinyl siding that will last for decades. Whether you’re thinking about purchasing vinyl siding from us, or if you have in the past, here are some ways to maintain your vinyl siding and keep it fresh for years to come.
Clean Your Vinyl Siding Regularly
Cleaning the exterior of your home isn’t too complicated. We recommend using a pressure washer and a vinegar solution to clean your siding. You can dilute the vinegar by mixing it with water – about 70% water and 30% vinegar is ideal.
Avoid harsh chemicals, and be sure to close your windows before getting started. If there are any electrical outlets in the area, shut off the power at the breaker and keep water away from them. Remember to wear safety glasses, too.
Once you’ve completed these steps and your home has been washed, wait about 5 – 10 minutes for the vinegar to break down any dirt or mold. Don’t wait too long, though—you don’t want the cleaning solution to dry.
Finally, rinse off the solution. We recommend doing this once or twice a year to keep your vinyl siding sparkling clean.
However, if you’re not experienced in pressure washing or if your vinyl siding is older and damaged, you can try a more hands-on, gentler approach.
Get a bucket of warm, soapy water and a soft bristle scrub brush for this. You can use a car wash brush with a long handle for those hard-to-reach places. Once it’s time to rinse, a garden hose will do the trick.
Either one of these methods will keep your vinyl siding looking like new.
Inspect Your Vinyl Siding
Walking around your home’s exterior and keeping an eye out for cracks or breaks is another important part of maintaining your home. This is especially true if you live in the Salt Lake City area or other locations with extreme weather conditions.
Since vinyl siding doesn’t decay like wood or other siding options, it can be difficult to notice a leak hidden behind the vinyl. If the wood beneath your vinyl is rotting, the vinyl on top may show warning signs like staining or coming loose.
Any damaged sections should be replaced as soon as possible, so we recommend inspecting your vinyl siding frequently to address any concerns as they arise. The faster we can stop a leak from spreading, the better.
Avoid Melting Your Vinyl Siding
Although this may sound self-explanatory, many homeowners aren’t aware that vinyl siding can melt. Protect your siding by keeping it away from direct sources of heat.
For instance, don’t place a grill directly beside your home. This can melt your siding, creating a wave-like effect on your home. Not only will this reduce your curb appeal in the long run, but an inspector may notice if you’re trying to sell your home.
Depending on the severity of the damage, the siding could also lead to moisture or insulation problems later on.
For this same reason, we don’t recommend painting your vinyl a dark color. Black, dark browns, and other dark colors absorb heat more easily than lighter, reflective colors. During hot summer months, if your vinyl continually absorbs heat from the sun, it’s likely to melt.
